What in the World is Going On?

Bonus Points for discovering the Artist!

Today is a new day and we're just getting started! BUT, around the world, life has been happening even as we sleep. There is no stopping time. Turn, Turn, Turn.  (Do you know that song?)  So, let's jump in and see What in the World is Going On?  Check out these current stories from around the world.  Choose one of the 7 articles to share the W,W,W,W, W? (Yes, you know what that means. Think about it!)  Be prepared to share a 60 second oral news report with all the details - and hook the listener on why they should care about your story.  Please independently follow the steps below:

1) Read the article.  Read it again.  Read it one more time.

2) Record the Who, What, When, Where, and Why? details on Microsoft Word or in your own handwriting.

3) Reformat the information in your own style (that would be the voice of your writing!) Be concise! Write a news article that you could read aloud to your class.

4) Practice reading your article until you are VERY familiar with the content and feel comfortable presenting.

5) Prepare to Air!  On DESHA Radio, you'll be able to show what you know! Give it your best shot!

Leave your questions as a Comment on this posting and I will respond ASAP.  Remember, you have only 3 LifeLines to ask your buddy for help.

Feeling Curious,
Mrs. W

NOTE:  Done? Print a copy of your news article.  Save it to your flash drive. Bring your flash drive to me.

Mrs. W said...

Anonymous: Choose one of the 7 articles! Read it 3 times. Identify the 5 W's and continue with instructions!

Bridget: Try again

Conner: Hey!

bridget said...

Anonymous said...

Ok Tahnk you!! I get it now!! =)))

Mrs. W said...

Yep - the headline story is large - and then the cool clicks under that....all are stories for you to choose. Thanks, Conner.

Reformat means - put it in your own words - and make it sound like a radio show! Thanks, Tehya.

bridget said...

Maddie said...

Do we do the [Calling All Astronauts! sign up know] ?

mollie said...

I don't get number 3.

Mrs. W said...

Click on "concise" Mr. Anonymous and you will find out the meaning.

Yes, Tehya, we are going to present.

Kudos to you, Bridget!

Mrs. W said...

Maddie, stick to the challenge for today entitled, "What in the World is going on?"

Mollie, Number 3 means write the article in your own words. Be expressive as you might hear someone on the radio or TV tell it!

Katelon said...

How come when I post a message, and then out my name where it says Name/URL and then I post it, it says from ANONYMOUS??? I'm sooo confused because now you do not know who said it??

tehya said...

Also what are we supposed to ask why.

bill said...

are we suppose to write the report on word

bridget said...

is this really going to be put on the radio

bill said...

i dont know if im sending comments or not

Mrs. W said...

Yes, Bill, use MS Word.

Why is an open-ended question that might have many answers. Why did this happen? Why do I care?

Don't click on Anonymous - just be sure to put in your first name when you click on Name/URL, Katelon

Katelon said...

Ok Mrs. Walters, my name finally came up!!! Thanks!! Now back to reading the atricle! =)

Anonymous said...

Gotcha!!Thanks!! :))

Conn3r said...

How Are You suppose To Tell When The Cow Power Started

Mrs. W said...

Yes, Bill, your comments are coming through

Good job, Katelon!

Bridget, we'll be completing a broadcast of DES Simply the Best Radio for our class.

madison said...

what do we do when we r done with #1 and #2 ???????????? :)

Anonymous said...

Ok, thank you for explaining it to me, and now I do the work right!

Anonymous said...

Move to step number 3, Madison, and re-write the story you read in your own words in "news" format.

For example, "Breaking news today as we discovered the amazing power of cows!"

How long have their been cows, Conner? :)

Mrs. W said...

Yep, go for it!

madison A Wilkes said...

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Tater Tot said...

Why , What , When , Where..... What are the rest of the Ws.

bridget said...

ok thanks mrs walters

Conn3r said...

mrs. walters do you want me to put unknown for when if it does not have a date?

Mrs. W said...

The 5 W's are just one way to collect important facts, so if a "When" is missing, then no big deal! Just use the information you collect to rewrite your article in an interesting way! Be creative - and make it sound awesome!

Anonymous said...

Tater Tot, what when why who where are the 5 ws

Conn3r said...

k thanks

Tater Tot said...

Mrs.Walters can You come over to my computer to see if its ok so far?

Katelon said...

Ok so when we write our thing to go on the "radio," do we have to use the words, when, where, why, what, and who?

Mrs. W said...

You guys are doing a great job of working independently! If you want me to preview your writing so far, just clap three times!

madison said...

what is desha radio????

Mrs. W said...

Good question, Katelon. You DO NOT have to use the words Who, What, When, Where, Why? That is an organizational tool to gather information.

Katelon said...

Ok so I just put the answers where who, what, when, and what?

Mrs. W said...

Correct, Katelon!

DESHA are the call letters of our class radio station. (Dugger Elementary School High Ability)

madison said...

do we need to save our rough draft of th 5 w's?????

Katelon said...

Are we allowed to use the 5 Ws in our radio thing? (If we want too?)

madison said...

then what do we do on step 5???????

Mrs. W said...

Sure, Katelon.

You may save both documents, Madison.

Katelon said...

Ok, because that is easier. :)))

Maddie said...

When does all of this have to be done??????

Mrs. W said...

After you print your news article, practice reading it aloud! When you're ready, come read it for me.

Mrs. W said...

Yeah for you, Mollie!

We will finish today.

Maddie said...

Thanks!!!!!!!

madison alyse wilkes said...

Mrs. W said...

Conner, when you have printed your article, saved it on your flash drive, given me your flash drive, and read "on the radio" then you may choose a logic challenge from the classroom.
