Dear Friends,
A lot can happen in a week. It can be life changing. And it certainly has been for the folks in Haiti. Give these challenges some thought:
1. Check out the map. Where is Haiti? Who is on the other side of the island? How far away is Haiti from Indiana? (Your answer might be ____ number of miles or more abstractly: Close enough to help )
2. Investigate the magnitude of a 7.0 earthquake. What would that likely do to our area of the country? What are the chances of that happening? Go here to read about Indiana earthquakes.
3. How can we help?
First, think outside ourselves. Does this really matter to me? Will it matter if it happens again in another country to which I am not connected? Do I care? Remember the meaning of ethnocentric? If not, check it out here. Now, let's put on some new glasses and take a second look.
Second, the American Red Cross has been around since 1881 and is a reputable volunteer aid organization that responds to disasters around the world. You can quickly donate $10.00 to the cause by texting: Haiti to 90999. You will be billed via your cell phone carrier. NOTE: You must have parental permission to donate.
Third, what are your thoughts? Brainstorm some ways you think we can serve Haiti.

I can't belive this happened!!! My world vision child lives there! I don't even know if she's ok... Anyway Haiti is an estimated 1,621 miles from Indiana. Its close enough to help!!! I give my heart out to all the people in Haiti.

2.A 7.0 earthquake would most likely do great damamge and tear the surface of the earth. The chances of one happening (in the next 50 years) would be 19-29 of a chance.
3.We can help by putting our deals aside and putting their deals in front of us. You must care about their situation. You can donate money, send food, water and other supplies they need. If your school is involved, do whatever you can to help them out, whether its a fundraiser or if its Penny Wars, do as much as you can as best as you can. Just think if it happened to us. Wouldn't you want other people to help us if it happened? There is chance it could happen!
