What Does It Take to Make the Grade?

So, you've heard of "inflation"- right? No, not blowing up balloons - but when everything seems to go up in price. Groceries cost more, cars cost more and even kids cost more. This supposedly happens when everyone has an increased flow of money. People have jobs that pay well and because they are earning more, they are willing to spend more. Some even buy when they don't have the money to pay for it. Go figure!

Right now, our economy is experiencing the opposite and that's called "recession." Prices will usually not increase because people have a shortfall of spendable income - so they are buying less. Businesses can't sell what people can't buy. Things are not necessarily cheaper - but people begin to wonder if they are getting all they can for their hard earned money. There is less money to spend, so we spend less. It causes us to think about what we buy - or it should.

So - let's take this information and think about school. Students earn grades in school - but how much are they willing to "spend" in terms of study and personal effort to earn that grade. Some people think students "expect" good grades for little effort.

After our opening exercise, read this New York Times article. Get ready for a great discussion on your expectations of school. How much are you willing to spend to make the grade?

Carpe Diem!

I think that people who recieved A's easily as a child in elementary school, will expect good grades in college. For example, when a person who has ALWAYS recieved A's and B's recieves a C or lower on an assignment will be very surprised and wonder why. They will generally blame it on the teacher or come up with an excuse. It is only your fault, no one elses. You control your own grades and will generally recieve them if you complete the assignment correctly, try your hardest, and put much effort into it.

No I do not agree some students are entitled to getting good grades because they are the ones who do the papers, not the teachers. Also, even if you are a good student that doesn't mean that you will always get good grades, and vice versa.

Yes, I agree some students are entitled to a good grade, I think if they are "smarter" or are looked-up to they have to do well or they will be looked down upon.

my opinion to grade a paper fairly.
Is to grade a paper like the student did it even if the student didn't study. So the student is not entitled to a good grade. sincerely Hunter

I think that just by working hard doesn't mean your entitled to good grades because you might not have done good on a test.

No,I feel if you don't study you don't deserve a good grade. If you didn't study you didn't give it any effort. If you study your hardest and answer all the questions you should at least get a B.

I think that people should get grades by how much effort you put into it because someone may try very hard and get a bad grade but on the other hand someone may take a lot of effort into a project and get a good grade and if the other may see the paper and the person may say I put a lot of effort into it and I ended up have an A+ on the paper. and the other person may say but I put a lot of effort into this paper and I got an D- and that person would say that is not fair. so I should get the same grade. So that is the fairest way to grade a paper or a project

But luckily, I am doing fine in school

The Fairest Way to Grade a Paper
I believe that if a student does a great job on a paper, but doesn’t follow the directions, they should be graded on the words they write, and then drop some points as a foul. But, what if they follow all of the directions, but do a horrible job? I think you should grade them on their words, once again, but then add a small amount of points for following the directions.

I think the fairest way to give a student a grade is based on what answers are right.

In my opinion, students should be graded on how well they covered the topic they were given, not if they did just what they were told. If the student did just what they were told, and claimed that they did their best, but their assignment does not cover the topic then they should not get anything above a C. They should be graded on how well they explained what they meant, and how well they worded it. They should not determine their grade on how hard they worked, but how well they covered it. The teacher has the right to give the student whatever grade they feel that the student deserves, but should grade it with fairness, not based on how well they like the student. The student should not think that their grade is based just on attendance of lectures and classes. Collin

I disagree that if you thought you did your best you should get the best grade. You have to earn your grade depending on what knowledge you have on the subject and also what you write. I agree that if you try your best and the work you give is the best you should get a good grade. Your grades are the teachers decisions.

I think that you should do everything the teacher says and do extra credit, to get a perfect grade

I believe the student that tries their hardest, really gives it their all and doesn’t get the grade they hoped to achieve should have a reason to be upset, but I also agree that if the student does what’s required, shows up prepared, has good citizenship, and never asks for anything extra should get a corresponding grade according to their work. The student that does only what’s required, is always complaining, and doesn’t think that giving their all should be a requirement, is the student that’s probably going to give you a hard time about their grades. Yes, if they did what was required and turned it in on time I think that they deserve a pretty good grade. Although students and parents may believe that it’s only the teacher figuring the grades, he doesn’t give them out but you have to earn it. ~K@thryn~

I think teachers should grade a paper on the knowledge that the student has about the topic.

If the students study hard and tried their best, and worked hard, they should get a good grade, and if they did a good job, they should get a good grade.

If it’s right they should earn a good grade. If not (even if they work really hard) they should earn a lower grade. NEAL

In my opinion, I think teachers should grade your work on how good it is, not how hard you work. I do, however, think that you should give them a little credit if they put forth the effort. If the work is right then they should get a good grade, but if it is wrong then they should not be allowed to get a good grade.

I think the fairest way to get good grades is if you try your best and listen to everything someone has told you. You need to get your work done and turned in on time to keep your grades up. You should not think you’ll get good grades because you showed up on time or you think you did your best. If you think you could’ve done better, then you really need to do your best. You earn your grades, teachers do not give you grades for the sake of giving you them because you think you should get them. But that’s just my opinion.

I chose the first question, I think that students should not be “entitled” a good grade because just because they show up does not mean they should deserve a B. They also shouldn’t be “entitled” a good grade because they did “exactly” everything their teacher told them to do. I think that the effort was good, but the correct information and the effort was even better.

I think the students should be graded on how much work they put into that assignment and how much they get right. Like if you put in a good effort on that assignment, it should be worth half of the grade. How much you get right should be worth the other half.
That is my opinion on how the students should be graded.

I think students should be graded 50-50. One of the ½’s is how much effort is put into the assignment , the other ½ is how many they got right. Students should get more credit for what they do and how much effort they put into it. Teachers reading this -maybe you will take this advice or maybe you won’t but those who do maybe your students will appreciate you more and respect you (even though they should already do most of that.) So students, leave more comments so the teachers might give you and other students more credit.

Hello, my name is Cobe, and I am going to tell you about how I think teachers should grade our work.

One thing a teacher should look for when graded is effort. If they do not try at all, they shouldn’t get THAT good of a grade. And another thing I think they need to look for is how well it is done. If they put a lot of effort into it, but every answer is wrong… they probably aren’t going to get that good of a grade.

Do you agree, or disagree?

How much students procrastinate can affect their work .I think that the fairest way to grade a student’s work is by the effort they use and the answers they get right. So, if I become a teacher that’s how I would grade my student’s work. That is my opinion about the fairest way to grade a student’s paper .Don’t you think?

The fairest way to grade a student’s paper is to grade it on how well they did on it or how hard they worked, because if they worked hard I would have to think that they would get a good grade. On the other hand, I don’t think they should get a good grade just if they are the teacher’s favorite student. That’s not fair to the other kids. Plus, it’s not nice and I don’t think you’re really supposed to do that.

I do agree somewhat about how students feel about their work, but students should get a grade for their effort too. Don’t you think so ?

My opinion about the way teachers grade student work is not important. But if you must know teachers should grade students by how well they do on their work. Also teachers should grade by their effort. That is my opinion about how teachers grade their work.

I think that the fairest way to grade a student’s work is to grade it on how well they can do, and by how well their brain works, and also on how well they work. I also think that a teacher shouldn’t be able to give a student a bad grade just because they don’t like them. I think that is the best way to give a student’s grade. Don’t you?

Yes, I do think people are entitled to good grades because they want to go to a good college. Teachers should grade them on how well they worked on it.

I think that the best and the fairest way to grade a paper is to look at how well the student did the work. If they just wrote a couple sentences and it was supposed to be a 300 word essay then they shouldn’t get a good grade because they didn’t follow directions. If a teacher graded a paper that was only a couple sentences when it was supposed to be a 300 word essay and gave it a good grade but then came to one that had 299 words on that same essay and gave that one a bad grade it would not be fair to the students because students who work harder, listen better, and following directions more - then they should be the one to get the good grades.

I do agree that some students feel that they should get a better grade than what they got. Some students feel they’re entitled to good grades because they got straight A’s the year before. Students that get good grades think that they need a good grade because they’re use to getting good grades. It’s also up to the teacher what the students get for a grade. Teachers that teach things at the high school probably grade a lot of papers everyday. I think students should get at least 50% on a grade. That’s why I agree.

The fairest way to grade a students work is by checking their effort and seeing if they got most of the answers right . If the student in past times show hard effort and in later times get a little lazy give them a B or a C. Just try to stay fair and if they say you aren’t fair just tell tem the explanation of why they got the grade they did.
